Material Properties Overview

To define Material Properties (e.g., Shear Strength) of abutments:

  1. Select Input Data Inout Data icon from the toolbar, the Analysis menu or the right-click menu.
  2. Select the Material Properties tab in the dialog.
  3. For a new file, a single default property type will already be defined. If you only require a single property (i.e., all of your abutments have the same strength characteristics), then you can simply define the shear strength properties for this one property type.
  4. If you need more than one property type (for example: if each of your joints has different strength characteristics), then select the Add Add icon button to create additional properties. After adding, click on the new joint property from the left pane. The values shown will be the default properties. You can change them to the desired values.
  5. You can change the default naming of the joint properties, as follows:
    1. First click on a name in the list.
    2. Then type in the new name in the Name box.
  6. The following strength criteria are available in CPillar for defining the shear strength of abutments:
    1. Mohr-Coulomb
    2. Hoek-Brown
    3. Generalized Hoek-Brown

See the Shear Strength topic for more information.

Assigning Material Properties

Once Material Properties have all been defined, you can assign them to the desired abutments.

There are two methods for assigning material properties to abutments:

  • Assign Materials Assign Materials icon option in Boundaries menu of Stope Section view. See the Assign Materials topic for more information.
  • Rock Mass and Abutment Strength tab of the Input Data dialog. See the Rock Mass and Abutment Strength topic for more information.
If you only have one Material Property type (i.e., the same property for all abutments), this does not need to be assigned, it will already be assigned by default to all abutments. Assigning properties is only required if you have more than one Material Property type.
