Rigid Analysis Overview

Failure Mode Considered:

  • Shear (vertical slippage at abutments)

Main Assumption

A simple "falling block" analysis, where the crown pillar or roof beam is treated as a rigid block. Elastic properties are not considered.

Applicability

  • Low, medium, or high confining stresses
  • Any span / depth ratio is valid
NOTE: Since only shear along abutments is considered, the solution is not restricted to a specific pillar shape. Rigid Analysis can be carried out for both Polygonal Pillars and Rectangular Pillars.

For reference, see A Limit Equilibrium Analysis of Surface Crown Pillar Stability.
