Traverse Information Import Rules and Limitations
Import File
Dips Import Wizard reads columnized data in Excel format (.xls or .xlsx).
MULTIPLE EXCEL IMPORT FILES
If importing more than one Excel file for a given Traverse type, ensure that all files have consistent sheet, and column format.
- Same number of sheets
- Same order of sheets
- Same order of column headers
- Same first data row
- Same header row (if a header exists)
NOTE: The selections in the Traverse Information Import page of the Dips Import Wizard dialog apply to all the Import Files, and are not set individually as file-specific settings.
If you need to import mutliple Excel file of differing formats, you can re-rerun Dips Import Wizard, make the corresponding selections, and unselect the Overwrite Existing Traverse Information checkbox. This will append the imported data.
Import Data
TRAVERSES
Selections in the Traverses tab must ensure that the import data follows the these rules:
- The ID Header Data must be non-blank.
- All orientation Header Data (i.e., Trend, Plunge, Orient 1, Orient 2, Orient 3) must be non-blank and numeric.
- Traverse IDs must be unique for all Traverses, not just for a given Traverse type.
If any of these rules are violated, error message(s) will appear under Warnings in the final Import Summary page of the Dips Import Wizard dialog.
COLLAR DATA
If importing curved borehole Traverse types (i.e., Curved BH Oriented Core, Curved BH Televiewer), you will also need to import Collar Data.
Selections in the Collar Data tab must ensure that the import data follows the these rules:

- The Collar Data ID matches the ID in Traverse Information.
- The X, Y, Z Header Data must be non-blank and numeric.
- The Total Depth Header Data must be non-blank and numeric.
SURVEY DATA
If importing curved borehole Traverse types (i.e., Curved BH Oriented Core, Curved BH Televiewer), you will also need to import Survey Data.
Selections in the Survey Data tab must ensure that the import data follows the these rules:
- The ID Header Data must be non-blank
- The Survey Data IDs contain the IDs in Traverse Information.
- All the orientation Header Data (i.e., Trend, Plunge) must be non-blank and numeric.
- The Total Depth Header Data must be non-blank and numeric.
- The Total Depth Header Data must be in ascending order with no repeats.
NOTE: If appending the data to existing Traverse Information (i.e., Overwrite Existing Traverse Information checkbox is unselected), the above rules will also be checked against the existing data.
