Import/Export Geometry

EX3 allows you to import and export geometry from the following file formats:

  • RS Geometry Object (*.rsgeomobj)
  • OBJ Files (*.obj)
  • STL Files (*.stl; *.stlbin)
  • Autodesk Files (*.dxf; *.dwg)
  • STEP Files (*.step)
  • IGES Files (*.iges; *.igs)
  • TIN Files (*.tin)

To Import Geometry:

  1. Select the Geometry Geometry workflow tab.
  2. Select Import Geometry Import geometry from the toolbar or Geometry > Import/Export > Import Geometry. It is also available from the File > Import menu.
  3. Navigate to the folder containing the file you would like to import and open the file. You can choose which type of geometry you want to import (i.e. geology surface, geology volume, or excavation volume, etc.)
  4. You will see the Import Geometry dialog, which displays a preview of the geometry, and allows you to configure the Orientation, Translate, Rotate, Scale and Role of the selected geometry.
  5. Geometry repair option for the imported surface is available when you press Next.
  6. When the import settings have been configured select OK to import the geometry.

After importing the geometry, further editing and processing can be carried out using the Geometry menu options.

RS3 files:

You can also import RS3 files, but some of the features may be unsupported. You will be warned about any unsupported features.

Old Examine3 Files:

EX3 should import any old Examine3D file. You will sometimes see warnings about non-orthogonal stress directions because these could be defined in Examine3D but they have no useful meaning behind them. They may also see warnings about importing non-closed geometries. This is indication that it is not a valid Examine3D model

To Export Geometry:

  1. Select the Geometry geometry workflow tab.
  2. Select the geometry layers you wish to export under visibility tree.
  3. Select from the Geometry > Import/Export > Export Geometry export . It is also available from the File > Export menu.
  4. Navigate to the folder containing the file you would like to export and save the file.
