Select Support Layer

The Select Support Layer Select Support Layer icon option allows you to select individual layers of a Composite Liner or a Structural Interface, for the purpose of viewing analysis results in individual layers. This determines the data (liner and/or joint) which can be viewed with:

for Composite Liners and Structural Interfaces.

Composite Liner

A Composite Liner in RS2 is a liner which may be composed of multiple layers of material, with an optional joint. For information about defining Composite Liners in RS2, see the Composite Liner Overview topic.

Structural Interface

A Structural Interface in RS2 represents a liner with a joint on both sides of the support. This can be used to model piles or geosynthetics for example. See the Structural Interface Overview topic for more information.

Select Support Layer

To use the Select Support Layer option:

  1. Choose Select Support Layer Select Support Layer icon from the Data menu or the toolbar. Select Support Layer is also available in:
    • the Graph Liner Data dialog
    • the Show Values dialog
    • if you right-click on a Composite Liner or Structural Interface
  2. You will see the Select Support Layer dialog. It will contain a list of all Composite Liners and Structural Interfaces which exist in the model, and the associated liner and joint layers for each. A "support layer" can be either a "liner" or a "joint" layer.
  3. In the Select Support Layer dialog, you may choose support layer(s) as follows (default selections will initially be in effect):
    • For a Composite Liner, you can select any one of the Liner (support) layers. If a Composite Liner includes a Joint, then the Joint data will always be available for plotting, it does not need to be selected.
    • For a Structural Interface, you can select one of the two Joints (i.e. the Joint on the positive or negative side of the Structural Interface). The Liner (support) layer of a Structural Interface will always be available for plotting, it does not need to be selected.
  4. When you are finished selecting the desired layer(s) select OK.
  5. Now when you use the Graph Liner Data option or the Show Values option, the results which are displayed will apply to the selected layer(s) of Composite Liners and/or Structural Interfaces.
  6. The currently selected layers can be changed at any time by repeating steps 1-4, to view results for different layers.

Note about Joint Data

It is important to note that Joints which are part of a Composite Liner or Structural Interface, are considered to be one of the "layers" of the Composite Liner or Structural Interface.

Therefore, the joint data is graphed with the Graph Liner Data option, and NOT with the Graph Joint Data option. Similarly, with the Show Values option, the joint data is grouped with the Liner data option, rather than the Joint data option.

If you have individual joints, you can plot them with the Graph Joint Data option. See the link for more details.

Plotting Multiple Layers

In the Select Support Layer dialog, you may only choose individual layers. However, in the Graph Liner Data dialog, you have the option of plotting the data for ALL layers on a single graph. This will override the selections in the Select Support Layer dialog.

  • For a Composite Liner, this means that you can plot data for all liner layers on a single graph.
  • For a Structural Interface, this means that you can plot data for both joints on a single graph.
