Reset All Displacements

The Reset All Displacements option allows the user to reset all calculated displacements to zero, for the entire model, after any stage of a multi-stage analysis.

The purpose of this option is to allow the user to filter out displacements that are not of interest, to provide a known reference state at any given stage. For example, the initial displacements which are calculated in the first stage of a surface excavation model, where the first stage is used to "settle" the model under it's own weight.

It is important to note that the Reset All Displacements option has NO EFFECT on the results of the stress analysis. The calculated stresses and strains are not affected in any way. Support results are also not affected. The Reset All Displacements option only affects how the displacement results are written to the RS2 output file, for the solid elements of the mesh.

The Reset All Displacements option simply provides a method of zeroing the calculated displacements after any stage, so that when plots of the Displacement contours are viewed in RS2 Interpret, the Displacements will be relative to the stage at which they have been zeroed.

NOTE: this can also be done with the Stage Settings option in the RS2 Interpret program, as described below.

To use Reset All Displacements:

  1. Select Reset All Displacements from the Displacements menu in the RS2 Model program.
  2. In the dialog, select the Reset All Displacements after stages check box.
  3. By default, displacements will be reset after Stage1 as indicated in the dialog. If this is what is required, then just select [OK] in the dialog.
  4. If you need to reset displacements after some other stage, then enter the desired stage number and select [OK].
  5. For complete flexibility, you may reset displacements after multiple stages. To do this, select the Add Stage button in the dialog to add the desired number of stages, and enter the correct stage numbers. If you accidentally add too many stages, click the mouse in a row in the dialog, and select the Delete Stage button. select [OK] when you have entered all of the stages at which the displacements are to be zeroed.

Equivalent RS2 Interpret Option (Stage Settings)

It should be pointed out that in the RS2 Interpret program, it is possible to view differential data between any two stages of a model. This is done using the Stage Settings dialog in RS2 Interpret. You may set any stage as a Reference Stage, and then all displayed results will be relative to the Reference Stage values.

For example, you could view the relative displacements between any two stages of a model using this option.

Therefore, the Stage Settings (Reference Stage) option in RS2 Interpret, can be used to achieve the same results as the Reset All Displacements option in the RS2 Model program.

One advantage of using the Reset All Displacements option in RS2 Model, is that once the results are computed, it is not necessary to use the Stage Settings option in RS2 Interpret, to view differential displacements. The Stage Settings (Reference Stage) must be selected each time you open a file in Interpret; this is not necessary if you have used Reset All Displacements in RS2 Model.
