Import Geometry

The Import Geometry option allows you to import geometry from many different file formats into RS3. File types include:

  • RS Geometry Object (*.rsgeomobj) (Rocscience Geometry object file format)
  • OBJ Files (*.obj)
  • STL Files (*.stl; *.stlbin)
  • Autodesk Files (*.dxf; *.dwg)
  • DTM Files (*.dtm)
  • STEP Files (*.step)
  • IGES Files (*.iges; *.igs)
  • TIN Files (*.tin)
  • OFF (*.off)
  • ASC Files (*.asc)
  • LAS Files (*.las)
  • LUCAS Files (*.mdl)
  • SHP Files (*.shp)
  • PLY Files (*.ply)
  • Deswik DUF Files (*.duf)
  • Slide3 Result Object (*slide3dresobj)

To Import Geometry:

  1. Select the Geology workflow tab geology workflow tab
  2. Select Import Geometry Import Geometry Icon from the toolbar or Geometry > Import/Export > Import Geometry. It is also available from the File > Import menu.
  3. Navigate to the folder containing the file you would like to import and open the file.
  4. You will see the Import Geometry dialog, which displays a preview of the geometry, and allows you to configure the Orientation, Translate, Rotate, Scale and Role of the selected geometry. You can also Add another file or Delete currently selected file.
  5. Using the checkboxes beside each entity, select the geometries you want to import and select Post-Processing.
  6. You can apply geometry repair options to the imported geometries. See Simplify Triangulation, and Find and Repair Defects options for more details.
  7. When the import settings have been configured select Done to import the geometry.

After importing the geometry, further editing and processing can be carried out using the Geometry menu options.

If you open a project (RS3, Slide3, EX3) saved with an older version, and it happens to contain an imported point cloud entity, you will get an error message that the point cloud entity was not correctly saved.
