Liner Overview

Liners in RS3 are 2-dimensional support elements which can be used to define:

  • shotcrete, concrete, reinforced concrete or similar excavation support systems
  • geosynthetic reinforcement for slope and embankment stability

In RS3, liners are added to the model as lining sets. Each lining set can consist of one or more liner layers with sliding joints. To define and add lining sets in RS3:

  1. Define individual liners with the Define Liner Properties option from the Liners sub-menu of the Support menu.
  2. If liner interfaces are to be included, define liner interfaces with the Define Joint Properties option from the Liners sub-menu of the Support menu.
  3. Define lining sets from individual liners (and liner interfaces) with the Define Lining Composition option from the Liners sub-menu of the Support menu.
  4. Add lining sets to the model with the Add Lining option from the Liners sub-menu of the Support menu.

Define Liner Properties

Liner strength and stiffness properties are defined with the Define Liner Properties option. For purposes of defining properties, there are three main liner types:

Defined liners need to be added to a lining set with the Define Lining Composition option.

Define Joint Properties

Liner interfaces are defined as joints in RS3. See the Liner Interface Overview topic for more details. Liner interface properties can be set with the Define Joint Properties option.

Define Lining Composition

Composite liners with multiple layers can be defined with the Lining Composition option. The properties of individual liner layers are defined with the Define Liner Properties option, while the Define Lining Composition option is used to define the order and staging of the liner layer components

Add Lining

Liners are added to the model using the Add Lining option.

Editing Liners

Options for editing liners include Edit or Delete Liner.

Liner Theory

For information about the numerical implementation of liner support in RS3 see the Beams and Plates document in the RS3 Theory section.
