Excel Import
RSLog has Excel templates that are designed for data entry consistent with its data structure. These Excel templates include one file (*.xlsm) for project and one file for test hole (*.xlsx), and they can be downloaded from the Download link located on the Import page.
Data entry in several cells in these Excel templates use pre-defined lists (e.g. sample types, drilling methods, etc). These lists come from the Settings worksheet (hidden); At the time of downloading template files, RSLog will automatically update these lists in the Excel files based on your RSLog settings.
If you prefer data entry using a spreadsheet format, or if you don't have internet connection during data entry (e.g. staying on a remote project site), you may take the following steps:
Downloading Excel Templates
In order to download latest Excel templates:
- Go to the Import page and click on Download Templates button.
- This will download two files:
- RSLog Excel Project Template.xlsm: this is the project Excel template and is macro-enabled. These macros handle selection of Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS). Before opening this file please Unblock the file (see below). Once opened, please grant the permission to enable macros.
- RSLog Excel Testhole Template.xlsx: this is the borehole Excel template. Before opening the file please Unblock the file (see below).
Unblocking the Files
Windows automatically blocks the downloaded files for security reasons. In order to use the features contained in RSLog Excel templates, the files must be unblocked prior to use.
- Right click on each file, select Properties,
- Select Unblock (see below) and click Apply.
Save the Files
Once both files are unblocked, save them as your source Excel templates. You will need these files for your next projects.
Data Entry in Excel Files
The Excel template files allow for data entry in both offline and online conditions. Once data entry is completed, you will need internet access to login to your RSLog account and upload the files.
Project Excel Template
Copy the source Excel template and start entering project data. This Excel file only has one worksheet:
- Database ID: if you are creating a new project leave this cell empty, otherwise the project ID for an existing project can be obtained by the following steps:
- open the dialog box to edit project information in RSLog,
- click on Copy button at the header (see below). This will copy project ID in clipboard,
- paste the copied ID in your Excel file.
- Project Data: enter project data in each cell.
- Units: select between Imperial and Metric unit systems.
- Coordinate Reference System (CRS): select the CRS from the list; This CRS applies to all your boreholes.
Test Hole Excel Template
Copy the source Excel template and start entering test hole data. This Excel file only has several worksheets:
- Database ID: if this is a new test hole leave this cell empty, otherwise the test hole ID for an existing borehole can be obtained by the following steps:
- open the subject test hole for edit in RSLog,
- click on Copy button beside the name of the test hole,
- paste the test hole ID in your Excel file.
- General Test Hole Data: most of this data is entered in General worksheet,
- Units: the unit system selected in test hole Excel file should match with unit system selected in the project Excel file.
- Coordinates: the coordinates are entered in Easting/Northing or Latitude/Longitude format depending on the CRS selected for your project.
- Working with Lists: most of the data entry in various cells in other worksheets is done by selecting an option from a list. These lists are automatically generated based on your RSLog data structure (i.e. the Settings page in RSLog).
Importing/Uploading the Excel Files
- Once data entry is completed, login to your RSLog account and go to the Import page.
- Click on Import Data link in RSLog Excel Templates panel to start uploading the files.
- After uploading all files, a new project will be created in your RSLog account and you will be automatically directed to the Test Holes page.
The page should appear as follows:
Select a destination project; The imported data could be saved under a new project or you can import borehole data to an existing project. Start by uploading the project Excel file. Then follow by uploading the test hole Excel file(s). Please note on the file browse dialog you can select multiple borehole Excel files:
- by holding Ctrl button and clicking on each file
- by clicking on the first file in the list, holding Shift button and clicking on the last file.
Once the files are uploaded, click on Import Data button. This will start processing each Excel file and if any data entry error is encountered during processing, an error message will be shown. If all files contain valid data, you will be redirected to the Test Holes page showing the list of all imported boreholes.
Export from DataNest App
If you use DataNest app for data entry, you can automatically generate Excel files compatible with RSLog. Then login to your RSLog account and go to Import page to upload your Excel files. A new project will be created in your RSLog account and you will be automatically directed to the Test Holes page.
Now that your data is transferred to RSLog, you can take advantage of all design and reporting features offered by RSLog.
Importing Older Excel Templates
RSLog Excel templates ver 1.3 and newer are supported for import.
