Define Base Strength
Use the Define Base Strength dialog to define the resisting properties of the soil directly beneath the base of the wall segment. To open the dialog:
- Select Wall > Base > Define Base Strength

Bearing capacity
The ability of the foundation soil to resist failure in bearing against gravitational forces transferred by the wall can be defined here.
- Based on soil properties: will use the applicable variation of the Terzaghi equation to calculate the bearing capacity, based on the selected design standard. The methodology may vary slightly depending on the selected design standard.
- User-specified: you can specify your own (unfactored) value of the ultimate bearing capacity.
Contact with soil
If the selected design standard is based on AASHTO, select the condition of contact between the base and foundation soil:
- Precast on sand
- Cast on sand
- Soil on soil
- On clay
- On rock
This selection affects the coefficients used during calculation of the base sliding resistance, and the limiting eccentricity value.
Apply base strength to
- All segments in the current wall
- Current segment only (Section 1)
Use these options to apply the current setting to either all wall segments in the current wall or the currently selected segment.
