Soil Profiles
In the Soil Profiles tab, you specify the type of soil profile you want to model:
- Horizontal Soil Layers
- Non-Horizontal Soil Layers
- Extruded section layers (Section creator)
Horizontal Soil Layers
Select Horizontal Soil Layers if you want your model to have horizontal soil layers only. You will be able to define the soil profile using depth or elevation values. The soil layers are defined in elevation by default.
The soil layers will be defined by entering a thickness or bottom elevation for each layer, and that thickness will apply to the entire model.
A Ground Elevation other than zero can be specified.
Non-Horizontal Layers
This option must be enabled in order to model non-horizontal soil strata. With this option selected, soil layers are defined by entering an XY position for a borehole, and the soil thicknesses at that location. Soils are interpolated between boreholes.
When this option is selected you can also model a Non-Horizontal Ground Surface.
For the interpolation between boreholes, there are five surface interpolation options:
- Inverse Distance
- Thin-Plate Spline
- Chugh
- Local Thin-Plate Spline
- TIN Triangulation
See the Interpolation Methods topic for more information.
Extruded Section Layers
This option enables you to create a soil profile using the 2D Section creator. Note you can only use elevation as vertical axis when this mode is selected.
