Import Joints from Dips
Dips is a stereographic projection program also available from Rocscience. Dips allows you to analyze joint data on a stereonet and determine the mean joint plane orientations of joint sets. These joint orientations can be saved by Dips. Planes can then be imported into other Rocscience programs, such as UnWedge.
To import planes from a Dips file:
- Select the Joint Orientations tab in the Input Data dialog.
- Select the Import from Dips button.
You will see a File Open dialog. - Navigate to the folder where the Dips (*.dip, *.dips6, *.dips7, *.dips8) file is located and open the file.
You will see the Dips Data Import Options dialog. - Select the data you are interested in importing (Sets, Individual Planes, User Planes).
- Select Weighted if you would like to apply Terzaghi Weighting to the values.
- Select Replace if you want to replace the default joint orientations already in UnWedge, or Append if you want to add on to them.
- Select the Add Duplicate Planes checkbox if you want UnWedge to import any duplicate planes found in the Dips file.
All of the planes stored in the file will automatically be read into the Input Data > Joint Orientations dialog and displayed on the Stereonet View within the dialog. - If there are more than three planes:
- You can use the Joint Combinations option to select any desired combination of three joints (see the Multiple Joint Combinations topic for details).
- You can delete unwanted planes with the Delete button. First, select the Joint ID button at the left of the joint orientation that you wish to delete, and then select Delete.

During a Probabilistic Analysis, the Dips Data Import Options dialog box also gives the user the option of importing the statistical data into UnWedge by selecting Set relevant statistic program.
