Compute

When you have finished creating a Slide2 model, you must run the analysis with Compute so that you can view the results in Interpret.

To start the Slide2 Compute engine, select the Compute Calculator Icon option from the toolbar or the Analysis menu. If you have not saved the file, you will first be prompted to do so.

The progress of the analysis will be displayed in the Compute dialog. When Compute is finished (a typical analysis takes a few seconds to run), you can then view the results with the Slide2 Interpret program.

Running Compute as a Standalone Program

The Slide2 Compute program, or analysis engine, will normally be run from the Slide2 Model program, by selecting the Compute option in the Slide2 Model program, after creating or editing a model.

However, the Slide2 Compute program can be run as a standalone program, if necessary. The name of the Slide2 Compute program is ASlide2W.EXE. If you run this program, by selecting the name or program icon from your installation directory, you will see the Compute dialog.

To run a Slide2 analysis on one or more files:

  1. Select the Open button in the Slide2 Compute dialog.
  2. In the Open File dialog, select a Slide2 file you would like to compute. Slide2 model files have a *.slim filename extension. If necessary, browse to the directory where the file(s) are located.
  3. You can select more than one Slide2 file if you wish to run consecutive analyses on multiple files. Select any number of Slide2 files that you would like to compute. (Hold down the Shift and/or Ctrl keys to select multiple files with the mouse.) When all desired files are selected, select Open in the Open File dialog, and the selected file(s) will be added to the File Queue in the Slide2 Compute dialog.
  4. Select the Compute button in the Slide2 Compute dialog, and the analysis will be run on all files in the File Queue. The analysis will be run using only the analysis methods selected by the user. The minimum safety factor for each analysis method is displayed as the analysis proceeds.
  5. When each analysis is completed, the file name will be removed from the File Queue and added to the Processed Files list.
  6. When all analyses are complete, select the Exit button in the Compute dialog.

After Compute has been run on a Slide2 file, use Interpret to view and interpret the results.

The results of a Slide2 analysis are stored in files with the same name as the corresponding Slide2 model file, but with a *.S01 filename extension.

Compute (Probabilistic Analysis)

If you are performing a Probabilistic Analysis with Slide2, the Probabilistic Analysis is automatically run when the Deterministic (safety factor) analysis has finished. The progress of the Probabilistic Analysis will be displayed in the Compute dialog.

  • If the Probabilistic Analysis Type = Global Minimum, then the Probabilistic Analysis is carried out on the Global Minimum slip surface located by the Deterministic Analysis.
  • If the Probabilistic Analysis Type = Overall Slope, then the entire Deterministic Analysis is repeated N times (where N = Number of Samples). This type of analysis may take a long time (several minutes or more) to complete.

The results of a Slide2 Probabilistic Analysis are stored in files with the same name as the corresponding Slide2 model file, but with a *.P01 filename extension.

STARTUP PRIORITY

When computing your model, you have the option to adjust the Startup Priority.

How to change the Startup Priority:

  1. Select the Compute Calculator Icon option from the toolbar or the Analysis menu.
  2. Click on the Slide2 icon in the top left of the Compute dialog.
  3. Select Startup Priority.
  4. Set the priority then run from the modeller.

What is the default Startup priority option?

Normal

When should a user change the startup priority?

The computation can take a lot of computer resources (CPU, memory, disk), and slow down the operation of other tasks running on the computer. If you want your computer to be more responsive and give priority to these other tasks, you can set the priority to Below Normal, Lowest or Idle. These progressively give less resources to the Slide2 compute engine and will free up resources to these other tasks. If you are in a hurry to get the Slide2 computation done, and you are running other tasks, the opposite applies. In this case, give Slide2 more priority (Above Normal, Highest).
