Define Auto Format

The Define Auto Format button in the Contour Options dialog, allows the user to define customized Auto Format contour options.

To define customized Auto Format contour options:

  1. Select the Define Auto Format button in the Contour Options dialog. The Define Auto Format dialog will appear.
  2. Use the options in the Define Auto Format dialog, to create a customized Auto Format option. See below for details.
  3. Select the Save button. A Save As dialog will appear. Auto Format contour options files have a *.raf filename extension. Save the file, and you will be returned to the Contour Options dialog.
  4. The file you have just saved will appear at the end of the list of Auto Format options in the Contour Options dialog, and can be applied at any time to any view, by selecting from this list.
If you want to create a customized Auto-Format based on an existing Auto-Format (for example, one of the pre-defined options), then first select an existing Auto-Format option in the Contour Options dialog. When you select the Define Auto Format button, the parameters of the Auto Format you selected, will be loaded into the Define Auto Format dialog, allowing you to use this as a starting point for creating a custom Auto Format.

The options in the Define Auto Format dialog are described below:

Number of Contours

Any Number of Contours between 2 and 60 can be used.

Mode

Contours can be displayed as Filled regions or as Lines.

Interpolate

The Interpolate method creates contour colours by interpolating between the Minimum and Maximum colours, using the Interpolation Method chosen: RGB, HSL Acute or HSL Obtuse.

  • RGB Method: Colours are defined in terms of RED, GREEN and BLUE components.
  • HSL Acute Method: Colours are defined in terms of HUE, SATURATION and LUMINANCE components. The Acute Method interpolates using the Acute angle between the minimum and maximum colours on the "colour wheel".
  • HSL Obtuse Method: Colours are defined in terms of HUE, SATURATION and LUMINANCE components. The Obtuse Method interpolates using the Obtuse angle between the minimum and maximum colours on the "colour wheel".

You can customize the Minimum colour, Maximum colour and Interpolation Method, to create your own customized Interpolation-based Auto Format option.

The Interpolate method is the default method used for the Hot to Cold, Hot Spots and Black to White pre-defined Auto Format contour options.

Custom

The Custom option allows the user to define a fully customized Auto Format option, where each individual contour can be assigned a customized Colour or Pattern. Colours and Patterns can even be mixed within the same Auto Format option. To create a Custom Auto Format option:

  1. In the Define Auto Format dialog, select the Custom option, if it is not already selected.
  2. If contour colours are already defined in the list at the left of the Custom area, then you can modify any existing contour, by selecting it with the mouse, and customizing the Colour and/or Pattern.
  3. If no contour colours are defined in the list at the left of the Custom area, OR if you wish to add additional contours, then select the Add button. The Add button will add a new contour to the end of the existing list, using the currently selected Colour and Pattern.
  4. If necessary, you can delete contours from the list by selecting with the mouse, and selecting the Delete button.
The Custom method is the default method used for the DOS Style, 16 Colour Display and Examine 3D pre-defined Auto Format contour options.

Save

In order to save your user-defined Auto Format option, you must select the Save button in the Define Auto Format dialog. When you select the Save button, a Save As dialog will appear.

  • Auto Format contour options files have a *.RAF filename extension (Rocscience Auto Format files).
  • If you name an Auto Format file SL_STARTUP.RAF, then the contour options in this file WILL ALWAYS BE READ IN WHEN THE Slide2 INTERPRET PROGRAM IS STARTED, AND WILL BE THE DEFAULT OPTIONS ON ALL VIEWS.
  • If you name an Auto Format file with any other name, then you will have to use the Auto Format list in the Contour Options dialog, to apply the Auto Format to the current view.

Once you have saved an Auto Format contour options file:

    • You will automatically exit the Define Auto Format dialog.
    • The new Auto Format will automatically be applied to the current view.
    • The filename will appear in the Auto Format list in the Contour Options dialog, and can be applied to any view by simply selecting from the list.
If you create a SL_STARTUP.RAF file and you no longer wish to use this file as the program default, then you will have to delete or rename this file, in order to restore the original Slide2 Interpret program default contour options (i.e. the Hot to Cold Auto Format option, with 24 contour intervals).
